THE EDITOR: A country emerges as a First World nation primarily because of the positive characteristics of its people. History is replete with evidence to suggest that the quality of a people adds to their quality of life.

Take for example countries such as China, Japan, the US, Russia and Germany that did not achieve developed-nation status overnight. It was largely due to the persistent, consistent, well disciplined and sacrificial approach of their citizens that their dreams of self-sufficiency and progress were ultimately realised.

THE EDITOR: The rants I am reading on Facebook and the ads I saw in the media before and following the general election were not unpredictable but they are dangerous. The rages, from both ethnicities, are masking an ominous demon grinning at us like hell. And that demon is getting stronger.

In 1982, after the election of the previous year, calypsonian Dennis Franklin (Merchant) wrote Let us Build a Nation Together:

Now the election bacchanal die away,

THE EDITOR: Sometimes it takes distance and time to see things clearly.

Just as you don’t notice the age lines setting in on your face, it’s hard to spot the slow cultural shifts taking place when it’s part of your daily reality.

As a Trinidadian expatriate, I’ve had that distance. My visits home have served as snapshots – moments in time that can be neatly packaged and compared to the ones that came before. So to my peers who find themselves shocked at the current climate, I say (with admittedly too much hubris) – you were just too close to see it coming.

THE EDITOR: It takes a general election for politicians to openly appreciate the necessity of hypocrisy, never mind its benefits.

It’s also a general election that allows voters to don their blindfolds and support corrupt candidates as they laugh all the way to the bank.

It’s at times like these that thinking is so immune from common courtesy that racism boils to the surface and people are emboldened enough to demonstrate all over social media that they have no principles, only prejudices.

This is who we are and as the Mighty Sparrow sang, We Like it So.

KAMALA HARRIS, 55, was not a household name before Tuesday. But the presumptive Democratic vice presidential nominee in the US election is well on her way to becoming one. And more.

If elected, Ms Harris could become the country’s first black vice president, its first Asian-American vice president and its first female vice president. Born in California, she is of Jamaican and Indian heritage.

THE EDITOR: On September 16, 2018, my daughter gave birth. She was employed as a clerk with the North West Regional Health Authority. She had a scheduled C-section and that enabled her to submit her claim even before her baby was born.

When nothing was received after about two months she contacted the National Insurance Board, only to be told there was a date discrepancy. She then contacted the NWRHA to get things rectified. Since then she has been calling, visiting the NIB office, sending e-mails to “customercare” and even to the ombudsman.
